It’s a little earlier than expected, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is now official! If you were smitten by Samsung’s turbo specs and new software on its latest flagship Android, but put off by the thumb stretching size of the five-inch screen, help is at hand. Is this the one it should have announced all along?

While the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini retains the same design cues as it’s bigger brother, it’s a more compact affair, and hopefully a more affordable one too. The centrepiece is a 4.3-inch screen with a 960×540 resolution display, rather than the original S4’s full HD five-inch panel, and it’s powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz process. The 8.94mm thin device packs an eight megapixel camera around back, and will come in both 3G and superfast 4G flavours at launch.

Things remain much the same on the software side of things – which, if you’ve read our review of the S4, you’ll know is no bad thing – however. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and boasts many of the same extras as its forebear, including its S Translator realtime language decoder, and its ability to control your TV using infrared, although it does drop one useful S4 feature: the dual-app screen view, presumably because Samsung felt it was unnecessary on a small phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini will come in white and black versions at launch, but the Korean gadget giant isn’t saying when that will be yet, or how much it will cost. We’re expecting to go hands on with it at Samsung’s London event on 20 June however, so we’ll hopefully find out more then.

In the meantime, jump into the comments below. Is this the size the Galaxy S4 should have been all along?
